I think my top 5 would be
1. EK
2. Doughty
3. Stammer
4. Holtby
5. Josi
I flip between Josi and Petriangelo |

Jake Gardiner has made many more misplays than the Game 7 one....actually, you can count on one or two or more per game. Many are beyond comprehension.
There is NO WAY I would have him ahead of Carlsson, and I don't think I could even place him in the Top 10.
Personal preference, I know. But, I watch a lot of Leaf games...and Gardiner is NOT a defenseman I want on my team. I would take Hamonic before him for sure...

I feel like his Gardiner placement is for comment bait.. anyone who's watched a Leafs game knows Gardiner doesn't belong on this list.. and that's coming from a Leafs fan!

well if you had to choose between them, I imagine you'd take the guy with 170 more career points than the other guy |

Yeah Doughty is the best dman of his generation and he has accomplished more than the rest of this list put together. He’s head and shoulders above the next player and Karlsson is numero 3. |

are you judging him based on the TEAM accomplishments, or the 1 Norris he won that most people felt he didn't deserve?
Karlsson is a more talented and impactful player than Doughty......and every stat backs that up. |

Schultz is in the same level as Gardiner, no doubt...I think they are a wash.
Out of the D-men:
Karlsson, Doughty, Pietrangelo, Josi, Carlson in this order...Schultz/Gardiner (tied), Hamonic coming right after. |

Are we going to go all the way to last years draft? This is some boring ass poop, even for Wilson. I could care less about most of these players. |

Worry about the defending stuff later. - Ryan_Wilson
It's ignorant statements like this, when talking about defensemen, that make people hate analytics. |

What’s funny is no nhl defenseman feels that way at all. Some are just gifted offensive players. |

I’m with you there. Karlsson is the flashier player who plays in the east that’s why he gets more love but Doughty is the far superior hockey player, Stanley cup Champion and Olympic Gold medal winner.
Karlsson couldn’t sniff his jock in the actual winning categories. |

Gardener over Carlson is off to me. - Victoro311
I don't know. At first glance I thought the same thing, but Carlson's last season I think skews that few.
Gardiner hasn't up quite the numbers of Carlson, but he's also played with on some TERRIBLE years of the Leafs. Looking over the advanced stats over the last TWO seasons, they've been pretty similar players. I didn't want only compare last year because I personally don't know if this past season was a aberration.
If Carlson continues to be the player he was last year then I definitely agree. As of right now I think it's a toss-up.
